Geostat works by coordinates from satellite.
It turns 360 degrees so works out angles.
The telescope sites on to a target and can give a distance to the target by electronic beam.
The bearing or angle from North will be given instantly.
The distance to the target will provide the coordinates for it.
The station then moves on to that station to pinpoint the next target.
These machines are computerised so not as much calculations as what I used to do.
Setting the M5 centre line out in the 1970s there were no satellites to help you had to set out from OS trig points on top of hills and triangulate the position.
If you’ve seen a trig point you might have seen the metal circle on the top , this is where the instrument was attached

Excellent topic,
It is very reassuring to see that we are using the latest technology available to improve the decline build progress etc. Greatland along with Newcrest must be among the leaders of mine technology which is going to stand them in very good stead for the future.

These instruments are interlinked with the geodata bases controlling the mine planning
Down the Decline will be sensors and Wi-Fi nodes sending information back to the data bases.
Also guidance systems on the machines.
Technical read on geodata bases

Decline length
By the next quarterly results on 27th April the Decline length may get to be near 2,000m that may get to halfway round the 4th spiral.
That’s an important milestone it enables the 3 further vent accesses to be opened up and the question remains will these be done in this phase or phase 2.
If in this phase a new gang will be required
